This month in November, we are proud to highlight a Township employee, Terry Hilmer, who is a military veteran. Terry serves in our Parks & Recreation department as a Park Attendant, which allows him to meet new people and spend his afternoons outdoors. He appreciates that his job offers autonomy, varied tasks, plenty of activity, and that no two days are alike.
Terry’s served active duty in the Air Force from 1974-1978. After basic and technical school, he spent three years at the Royal Air Force (RAF) Chicksands in Bedfordshire, England where he copied and monitored foreign communications. In 1985, Terry joined the Air Force Reserves. After a year as a Psych Tech at Malcolm Grow Medical Center at Joint Base Andrews in Maryland, he was commissioned as a Medical Service Corps Officer in the Aeromedical Evacuation (Aerovac) Unit at Andrews Air Force Base. His crew flew live and training missions on C-141s to Europe, Panama, Cuba, and Roosevelt Roads Naval Air Station. Overall, his total years of military service including active and reserve is13.
During his 35-year professional career in Operations, Terry held several leadership roles such as Director of Administrative Services, Director of Office Services & Property Management, and Facilities Manager. His responsibilities ranged from capital budgeting, procurement, facilities & equipment maintenance & repair to office build-outs and new construction. In his tenure, he was with the American Psychiatric Association for seven years and 11 years at the National School Boards Association.
He decided to pursue a Park Attendant position with Lower Paxton to be in the fresh air and because he valued the positive public engagement he experienced as a Code Enforcement Officer with Middletown Borough. As a retiree who works part-time, Terry makes sure to set aside time to read, garden, and exercise.
