Last Set of Bridge Beams to be Installed this Week at I-83 Exit 50 near Colonial Park
-- Night work will affect traffic the next three nights between midnight and 5 AM. --
Harrisburg, PA – The contractor for the Interstate 83 Exit 50 interchange project will be installing the last set of bridge beams this week for the new bridge that carries Route 22 over I-83 near Colonial Park in Lower Paxton Township, Dauphin County. There are 14 new bridge beams to be installed to finish widening the new bridge – 7 beams for the span over northbound I-83 and 7 beams for the span over southbound I-83. This work is scheduled to start at around midnight tonight and continue until 5 AM on Wednesday, September 12. It will be repeated at midnight on Wednesday night to 5 AM on Thursday, September 13; and also at midnight on Thursday night to 5 AM on Friday, September 14.
When each beam is installed over southbound I-83, southbound traffic on I-83 approaching the bridge will be slowed down by the Pennsylvania State Police using a “rolling roadblock” so that there will be no live traffic under the bridge as each beam is set. The traffic pattern will be different for setting the bridge beams over northbound I-83. In the northbound direction, motorists will bypass the installation of each bridge beam by being directed onto the off-ramp for Route 22, across Route 22, and then onto the on-ramp back to northbound I-83. Motorists are asked to be alert to this operation, to obey all work zone signs, and to slow down when approaching and traveling through the work area – for their safety as well as for the safety of the construction crews.
This work at the I-83 Exit 50 interchange is part of an overall construction contract that began in 2016 to replace three bridges that cross over I-83 in Lower Paxton Township – Elmerton Avenue (State Route 3026), Route 22 (Jonestown Road) and Union Deposit Road (SR 3020). The Elmerton Avenue bridge was rebuilt in 2016. Construction of the Union Deposit Road bridge at I-83 Exit 48 wrapped up last fall. The Route 22 bridge at the I-83 Exit 50 interchange should be substantially complete by the end of this year. All three new bridges will provide greater lateral under clearance to provide the width necessary to widen I-83 to six lanes. The I-83 widening project is currently scheduled to start late this year and finish in 2021.
PennDOT has contracted with New Enterprise Stone & Lime Company, Inc. of New Enterprise, Pennsylvania, to conduct the three bridge replacements at a cost of $34,199,999. The overall project with the three bridges is scheduled to wrap up in spring 2019.
