SELECTIVE ENFORCEMENT
Selective enforcement is a function of the Townships comprehensive traffic and crime enforcement program. It can include aggressive enforcement in targeted geographical areas, an increased police presence to enhance public awareness and/or education and training to positively affect a particular traffic or crime problem.
Selective enforcement details take place in areas which have been identified through local analysis as needing targeted intervention due to high rates of crime, crashes and/or DWI, speed, or other traffic-related problems. A statistical analysis of traffic safety needs is the basis for determining the type and method of enforcement and/or training needed to improve traffic safety in each community.
The Intensive Neighborhood Selective Traffic Enforcement Program (INSTEP) is a program that uses selective enforcement as part of a multi faceted approach to mitigate traffic problems. It is an initiative to reduce traffic violations and improve the quality of life within all neighborhoods. INSTEP requires that traffic and accident data, along with citizen complaints, are analyzed to determine if actual traffic problems exist. A systematic approach involving improved roadway signage, intensive enforcement, and public education is used to positively affect the traffic problem and gain driver compliance.
